Muira Puama: Ancient Amazonian Secret to Great Sex

I’d formally studied herbal medicine since adolescence and had only peripherally heard of Muira Puama before 2019, when I dedicated myself to exhaustively researching the full repertoire of aphrodisiac herbs. I ordered loose cut Muira Puama, an Amazonian tree bark, from two different suppliers and proceeded to acquaint myself with her in much the same way I had countless herbs before - reading clinical trials and materia medica; making it into decoctions, teas and tinctures; taking a lot of it. And I quickly fell hopelessly in love, even felt cheated that I’d not found her sooner.

Also known as “potency wood” for its ability to enhance and sustain male sexual vigor, Muira Puama is native to the Amazonian rainforests where it has an extensive history of use for both male and female libido, arousal and sensation.

Think irresistible, overwhelming desire; sex-on-the-skin; maybe even the reason Brazilians have long been considered among the sexiest people on earth? Muira Puama is a well established true aphrodisiac and nerve tonic - it amplifies desire while relaxing the body and reducing stress. It contains sterols that act as a precursor to testosterone production - responsible in both sexes for increased libido and sexual energy. And…

…it relaxes the corpus cavernosum that surround the penis and clitoris, thereby engorging the genitals with blood flow and sensation.

Yes, there is science, including pharmacological data (how we know its active compounds and mechanisms) as well as contemporary clinical trials, which show that Muira Puama is equally effective in women as it is in men, helping to restore a lusty sumptuous connection to libido and pleasure - the absence of which is often caused by hormonal fluctuations or imbalances, the postpartum or perimenopausal periods, or simply with time.

The plant itself has seductive small white pungent flowers that smell much like jasmine, and though used by indigenous peoples for upward of the last millenium throughout the region, it was first “discovered” by early European explorers in the 1920’s who, wildly impressed, brought it back to Europe for scientific research.

That research shows it effectively enhances desire and sexual frequency in up to 85% of both male and female participants, and improves male potency and ability to maintain erection in up to 90% of participants who report struggles with sexual response.

So why don’t we know about Muira Puama, while Viagra remains a household name? I’m impartial to believe that yet again the contemporary pharmaceutical enterprise has a hand in this disconnect, and that it should change, as this is an fantastic herb to include in your personal medicine cabinet - inexpensive, accessible, easy to use, and very safe.

Secondary studies do even more to sing Muira Puama’s prasies - showing she tends to be energizing, has an antioxidant effect, may be beneficial as an Alzheimer’s preventive and as a preventive for baldness?! And for women, the hormone balancing effects of Muira Puama ease menstrual cramps and PMS, and are associated with improved birth outcomes for women trying to concieve. I am simply in awe of this plant.

I include a healthy dose of the highest quality Muira Puama which I extract myself, in our Classic Aphrodisiac Formula, #12, and in our Female Arousal & Libido Formula, #16. They’re both gorgeous formulas for reawakening or deepening the experience of all things sex.
